Another Blackberry Pearl 9100 to Speculate On
It looks like it’s time to start speculating again. This time, on the new Blackberry Pearl that many are saying is the Pearl 9100. Pictures leaked online reveal what seems to be an updated candybar successor to the pervious Blackberry Pearl 81zz smartphone series and further increased the rather uneventful Pearl tribe. A video had earlier been leaked as well but they’ve been withdrawn from circulation as if some god sitting inside a plush Research In Motion office suddenly decided to unplug its publicity.
Talk about publicity, if there’s anything than can drum-up pre-sales publicity, it’s an online cat and mouse game. But that’s not new among mobile phones. The big majors do it most of the time. The pictures we posted have been gestating on our editorial desks for quite some time now (we don’t really publish them as soon as we received them. Some verifying needs to be done.) But it’s time to say something about it as just about every other mobile community site and blog is abuzzed with the unofficial sightings on the new Blackberry Pearl 9100.
What’s New About it?
Codenames like Stratus or Striker are bandied about as its production identifier prior to getting released out in the market. At this time, we don’t expect any technical specification relapses yet. But just looking at those unofficial pictures reveal there’s really nothing new in the way it looks. It’s got the candy bar form factor with wavy rows of keys that are really more like a QWERTY keypad straight out from its SureType design with multiple characters squeezed on each key.
The display is so-so in terms of size and it looks like this is the first handset in the Pearl lineup to have the actual Pearl brand emblazoned on the rear cover right between the camera lens and flash. We won’t be surprised if RIM decides on using a more updated name like Pearl II when it gets officially announced.
We have one reasonable Blackberry authority that this is the third Blackberry Pearl handset to sport 3G and running RIM’s updated 5th release of its proprietary Blackberry operating system. The new optical trackpad for navigation is featured on this phone, replacing the often complained about trackball on its two earlier Pearl handsets. Not that it doesn’t do the job but testimonies from colleagues who have used the Pearl and other Blackberry handsets using one had to have the trackball replaced every 3-4 months of normal use. Hopefully this new optical trackpad fares better in the durability department.
Previous Blackberry handsets were notorious for omitting features we’ve come to expect from serious mobiles phones targeting the business crowd, like WiFi. We’re happy to hear that the Blackberry Pearl 9100 has one.
Expected Availability
Knowing how slow RIM can bring new handsets to the market, this product leak at this time of the year clearly indicates you should not expect this anytime soon to make it for the holidays. We have consistently observed these Blackberry product leaks to come months before their intended releases. Counting another 6 months from now, we expect to see the new Pearl 9100 or whatever its name will be sometime in the second quarter of 2010. But we don’t mind getting that prediction wrong, if it means getting it earlier.
