The Concept
If you don’t have a cell phone signal inside your home, office, car, or cabin and you do have a signal good enough to make cell phone calls outside of it, you can have a wireless cellular signal inside, too.
You are likely skeptical of this statement. I would be, also. The truth is, I am in this business because of my frustration with dropped calls and no cell phone service where there should be. It just made no sense to me that NASA (NASA is now a customer of ours at UnwiredSignal.com) could talk to a man on the moon, 238,000 miles away, and I couldn’t talk to somebody around the corner. I got so angry one day in 2000 that I determined there had to be a better way.
Cell phone signal boosting does work. It works just the way your television signals are boosted by antennas, dishes, amplifiers, and/or cable boxes. Using a cell phone or computer air-card inside a building is like watching TV in a building with only rabbit ears.
Boosting cell phone signals, or any other radio wave, is not done with smoke and mirrors and it doesn’t work just sometimes. If you have a cellular signal outside, it can be repeated wirelessly over a predetermined inside area, pure and simple. The formulas and the equipment to do it with have been in existence for decades.
Here is an explanation of which cellular repeater system to use:
For a wireless cellular signal to be repeated inside an average house or small building, the product that you need to project the signal throughout a given area is called a “Repeater System Kit“.
What is a Wireless Cell Phone Repeater System?
As the picture above shows, a repeater system kit consists of an outside antenna that is connected by coax cable to (usually) a lightning fuse. It, then, connects, via coax, to an amplifier which connects, via coax cable to an inside antenna.
How Does a Wireless Cell Phone Repeater System work?
For incoming calls, the outside antenna picks up the outside signal and boosts it. It sends it to the amplifier, which boosts it more, and pushes it through the inside antenna, to be projected throughout a given area. The size of this area can be figured in advance, so you are assured that you are buying a product that will actually do what you need to have done (what a surprise, huh?).
Most cellular signal repeater systems are bi-directional. For outgoing calls, the sequence is just reversed.
Choosing the Frequency to Use
Cellular signals in America are broadcast on 824-894 MHz or 1850-1990 MHz., except for Nextel (not to be confused with parent company, Sprint). Nextel operates on 806-866 MHz for the walkie-talkie part and 1850-1990 MHz for the telephone part.
You don’t need a dual band repeater system at a fixed location unless you have people using multiple service providers. This is because the device, a cell phone used alone, a computer air card, or a cell phone repeater system, picks up only the strongest signal.
If your service provider uses only one frequency, like, say, TMobile which uses 1900 MHz exclusively, your choice of which frequency repeater system to use is easy. Tmobile uses only 1900 MHz so you would buy the 1900 MHz cell phone signal booster system.
If your service provider uses both, the 800 and 1900 MHz bands, your decision as to which one to use is still easy. Your cell phone and/or computer air card use only one frequency at a time (the stronger one),whether using them with a booster system or without one. You can use either cell phone signal repeater system, the 800 MHz system or the 1900 MHz system.
When both frequencies are being used by your service provider we recommend using the 800 MHz repeater system because it works better and costs less. It’s hard to believe, but true. This is because it takes more than twice the power to project a 1900 MHz signal the same distance as 800 MHz.
If you will be using your computer air card to load data files regularly, you may wish to use the 1900 MHz repeater system because the 65 dB 1900 MHz system will load up to 3.4 times faster than the 65 dB 800 MHz repeater system.
Do not, however, use the 50 dB Dual Band SOHO cellular repeater for the 1900 MHz system.
For 800 MHz, most homes and offices to 10,000 sq. ft. can use a standard, 50 dB gain signal repeater system kit, like our Wilson 801245 B if there are 3 or more bars of signal strength on your cell phone, outside – on the ground.
1900 MHz Important Note: It takes more gain to push 1900 MHz than it does to push 800 MHz. Therefore, you need a 65 dB amplifier for your repeater system to have equal performance as the 50 dB 800 MHz system. A standard 1900 MHz repeater system kit, like our Wilson 801365 B.
Cell phone signals will penetrate standard sheetrock and it can usually go through 2-3 walls of it with no problem. They will not penetrate solid wood, concrete, brick or metal.
Choosing the Power of Your Repeater System
Reputable cell phone signal enhancement companies will provide detailed installation instructions with the kit, plus before, during and after installation telephone consultation. The average home and small office applications are simple and take just a couple of hours to install, if purchased from a reputable dealer.
But, unless you are familiar with these kinds of products, you are asking for trouble by buying them from someone who does not ask you numerous questions concerning your signal problems and what you are trying to achieve before selling them to you. One cannot even make a proper product recommendation without knowing those answers.
